Yin Yoga

What Is Yin Yoga?

Yin Yoga is a slow, mindful style of yoga in which postures are generally practised seated or lying down and held for several minutes. Unlike more dynamic styles of yoga, which emphasise movement and muscular engagement, Yin Yoga invites you to soften unnecessary effort, settle into stillness and become more aware of your breath and bodily sensations.

The practice applies gentle, sustained stress to the body’s connective tissues, including fascia and the tissues surrounding the joints. With regular practice, it may help improve flexibility and range of movement, particularly around the hips, pelvis and spine.

But Yin Yoga is about more than physical flexibility. It offers an opportunity to slow down, quiet the mind and reconnect with yourself. Through stillness and mindful breathing, you are invited to observe your sensations and emotions with curiosity, patience and compassion. At the heart of Yin Yoga is the relationship between the body, the breath and the flow of energy.

The Five Elements & Meridian Lines

Inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yin Yoga draws on the concept of meridian lines and the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.

Each of our classes explores a specific element and its associated meridian pathways, guiding the choice of postures and the intention of the practice. Through this connection, we explore different qualities of the body and mind, bringing awareness to balance, seasonal changes and our inner experience.

With the support of bolsters, blocks and blankets, postures can be adapted to suit different bodies and needs. There is no need to force a stretch or achieve a particular shape. The invitation is to find your own comfortable edge, listen to your body and allow time for stillness.

The Benefits of Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga offers a moment to slow down, reconnect with your body and find balance in a busy life.

  • Improved flexibility — Gently explore your range of movement and support mobility.

  • Stress relief — Slow down, breathe deeply and encourage relaxation.

  • A calmer mind — Cultivate mindfulness, patience and inner stillness.

  • Body awareness — Learn to listen to your body and respect its needs.

  • Emotional balance — Create space to notice your feelings with greater awareness and compassion.

  • Rest and renewal — Balance a busy lifestyle and more dynamic forms of exercise with moments of stillness.

Sometimes, the greatest benefit is simply giving yourself permission to pause.
